Biak Mawi

Hello!

Thank you all for supporting this important cause. My name is Biak Mawi, and I’m incredibly honored to be a part of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation honoree list.

I was born in Burma, also known as Myanmar, and I am proud to call Detroit my home. Growing up, I was always taught the value of community and helping others, that belief continues to guide me every day. Even though my own career path is in a different area of healthcare; I'm currently on my path to go back to school to become a cardiac sonographer, I know how vital it is to shine a light on health issues that may not always get the attention they deserve, especially in minority communities like mine.

What is CF?
Cystic fibrosis (CF), is a progressive, genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. It causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the body, leading to severe respiratory and digestive problems. While there is no cure yet, advances in research and treatment are giving people with CF a better quality of life and more hope than ever before.

How WE can help!
That progress depends on awareness, support, and donations. And that’s where all of us come in. Your support today can help fund life changing research, provide essential care for patients, and bring us closer to a cure. Even if CF doesn’t directly affect you, your involvement can mean everything to someone who’s living with it. I am asking for a small donation $1-2 dollars (or any amount you are comfortable with!) which will be towards the research of CF for better health, stronger communities, a future without CF, and a brighter tomorrow.

As someone who believes deeply in the power of community, I want to use my voice not only to raise awareness here in Detroit but also to reach others from my background and show them that no matter where we come from, we all have the power to make a difference.

Thank you for being here, for caring, and for helping us fight for a future free from cystic fibrosis.

Matthew 5:14-16
"You are the light of the world... Let your light shine so that others may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

I am being honored by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at a special event recognizing outstanding professionals in my community. In accepting this distinction, I have committed to raise money to help the Foundation realize its mission of curing cystic fibrosis (CF) and providing all people with CF the opportunity to lead long, fulfilling lives.

Please help me meet my fundraising goal by making a donation. By supporting my fundraising efforts, you have an opportunity in your lifetime to be part of ending this disease. Please consider joining us and help make medical history.

Nearly 40,000 people in the United States have cystic fibrosis: a progressive, genetic disease that affects the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. Sixty years ago, children with CF usually did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, because of Foundation-supported research and care, the median survival age of people with CF is over 50. Working alongside the CF community, the CF Foundation has fostered the development of more than a dozen CF treatments and helped add decades of life for people with CF. Yet, many people with CF do not benefit from existing therapies. Our vision is a cure for every person with cystic fibrosis – a life free from the burden of this disease – and we will not leave anyone behind.
