MacKenzie Dias
I am proud to be one of this year’s New York Elite honorees. New York’s Elite is a group of leaders from the Metro NY area who are committed to professional growth and a fundraising and awareness campaign that benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and their mission to find a cure for CF.
My Personal Connection to CF
I was born into a family where cystic fibrosis was part of our everyday life. My two older sisters, Ashley and Lindsey, both had CF. I grew up surrounded by hospital visits, treatments, and the sound of nebulizers, but also by love, laughter, and relentless hope.
When Lindsey’s health began to decline, my parents became two of the first in the country to each donate a lobe of their lungs to their child. Later, my aunts also became donors, giving lung lobes and kidneys to extend my sisters’ lives. When one of Lindsey’s transplanted kidneys failed, I became a donor myself.
Even after everything we gave, Ashley passed away in 2012 at 27 while waiting for a second double lung transplant, and we lost Lindsey three years later at 30. Two years ago, I learned that I also have atypical cystic fibrosis, a diagnosis that wasn’t detectable when I was a child. It was a moment that reframed everything. I carry my sisters’ memory, my family’s legacy of hope, and my own diagnosis into this work. I am committed to supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation so that one day no family has to go through what mine did. Every donation brings us closer to the day when CF stands for Cure Found.
