I'm fundraising for cystic fibrosis because it represents everything I believe in-resilience, advocacy, and the unwavering commitment to help others live better, fuller lives. While I don't have a family member personally diagnosed with CF, I've long been moved by the stories, the struggle, and the strength of those who face this disease each day. I chose this cause because it deserves more attention, more funding, and more voices-and I'm proud to lend mine.

Cystic fibrosis is a rare genetic disease that affects the lungs, pancreas, and other organs, making basic functions like breathing and digesting food difficult. It's a lifelong condition that demands constant medical attention and often robs individuals of the ease most of us take for granted. What strikes me most is the fact that many of those living with CF are incredibly young, yet they fight harder every day than most of us ever have to. That courage deserves support. That fight deserves funding.

As a graduate nursing student, I've dedicated myself to a life of service. Nursing has opened my eyes to the realities of chronic illness-the day-in, day-out work it takes for patients and families to stay afloat. I've seen how a compassionate provider can transform fear into strength, and confusion into confidence. That's the type of nurse I strive to be: one who listens, uplifts, advocates, and takes action.

My involvement in healthcare is what led me to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. I wanted to do more than observe; I wanted to contribute. Through this campaign, I get to channel my skills and energy into something bigger than myself-supporting a community that constantly inspires me. I've previously participated in philanthropic work focused on chronic illness awareness, including diabetes and cancer, but CF stood out to me because of the tight-knit community, the progress being made through science, and the hope that a cure is no longer a far-fetched dream, but a real and reachable goal.

My background in biology, along with my interest in advocacy, gives me a deeper appreciation for the strides research has made in treating CF. Breakthroughs like CFTR modulators are changing lives-but access, awareness, and continued innovation are still critical. That's where fundraising comes in. The dollars raised through campaigns like this directly impact patients by funding cutting-edge research, comprehensive care, and community support programs. It's not just about giving-it's about transforming futures.

Outside of nursing, I'm also a certified personal trainer, and I see health through a dual lens: medical and physical. Movement is life. But for people with CF, even breathing can feel like a workout. That reality pushes me to be better, do better, and advocate harder. If I can train someone to gain strength, I can also help raise awareness and funds to help others breathe with strength. These two parts of my identity-nurse and trainer-fuel my dedication to making wellness more accessible to all, including those with chronic illnesses.

This campaign also means something to me as a woman who values leadership, impact, and authenticity. Being selected as one of Pittsburgh's 50 Finest is an opportunity not just to fundraise, but to amplify voices, inspire action, and serve with purpose. I've spent years building a platform that empowers others, and I want to use it for good-for something that truly matters.

Fundraising isn't just a task-it's a passion. I've helped lead charity events, food drives, and advocacy campaigns throughout college and beyond. I've spoken up for underrepresented populations and volunteered to support children with special needs and adults with health disparities. This campaign is a continuation of that path. It aligns with everything I've worked toward, both personally and professionally.

I may not have a direct family member affected by CF, but I'm driven by empathy, science, and a fierce desire to support those who do. I believe that showing up for a cause doesn't require a personal tragedy-it just takes heart, consistency, and the willingness to stand beside those who need us. That's exactly what I plan to do.

If you're reading this and wondering if your donation makes a difference, let me assure you-it does. Your support helps accelerate research, enhance treatment, and give hope to families who deserve more tomorrows. I'm committed to making every dollar count and to showing up for this cause with integrity, enthusiasm, and all the energy I've got.

Together, we can be part of something extraordinary. Together, we can be the breath behind the fight for a cure.

With heart,

Margret Russo
