I am honored to announce my selection to the STANDOUT Class of 2019. STANDOUT is a program of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and each year recognizes professionals throughout Charlotte for their contributions to the community, both professionally and philanthropically. The STANDOUT program culminates with an awards ceremony on Friday, October 4 at The Ritz-Carlton.

I originally got involved with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to honor my great friend and guardian angel Julie Tamborino. Julie was a beautiful, strong, and passionate young woman who made an amazing impact on my life while I was in school at the University of South Carolina. She was and still is one of my role models that had an influence on everyone she met but especially our sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. Julie was the hardest working person - balancing a double major, being elected president of our sorority, and kicking butt at soccer intramurals. She was present at every event and always made those around her smile with her brutal honesty and wit. Being around Julie you would have never known she was battling a life-threatening illness. Unfortunately, she lost her battle at just 21 years old during our Junior year of college.

In accepting the honor of participating as a STANDOUT, I am raising funds and awareness in the fight against cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is a rare, genetic, life-shortening disease that affects every organ in the body and makes breathing difficult. In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria, leading to life-threatening lung infections. Sixty years ago, most children did not live long enough to attend elementary school, but thanks to Foundation-based research and care, the median survival age of people with CF is now into the 40’s.

As I continue to raise money and awareness for our sweet Julie, we also are raising money for those children still fighting the disease. Grahym, who you see here, lives right here in the Charlotte area. She fights CF every day. She spends hours a day on treatments, is susceptible to chronic lung infections like bronchitis and pneumonia, and will experience a decline in lung function over time. Currently there is no cure for CF.

As a friend, family member and/or colleague, I am asking for your financial support in the quest to help find a cure for this devastating disease. Your generous contributions go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the world's leader in the search for a cure for CF. The Foundation was started by parents desperate to save their children’s lives. Tremendous strides have been made over the past 60 years in accelerating innovative research and drug development, as well as advancing care and advocacy. Virtually every approved cystic fibrosis drug therapy available now was made possible because of the Foundation and its supporters. Still, we believe no one should have to die at a young age. We will not rest until we have a cure for all people living with CF.

Please consider making a donation toward my efforts. There are two ways to help:

1) Make a 100% tax deductible donation online using this webpage.
2) Purchase a ticket(s) to join me at the STANDOUT Awards Banquet on Friday, October 4 at 6:00pm at The Ritz-Carlton in Uptown Charlotte. Tickets can be purchased on this site or by calling the CF Foundation office at 704-321-7852. Tickets are $175 and include a dinner, beer, wine, jazz music and the opportunity to support the group of STANDOUT Honorees receiving awards.

Your support is greatly appreciated. Thank you for being a vital part of this endeavor.
